Ford Extended Warranty Reviews

Ford extended service plans are a good choice if you’re looking to purchase an extended warranty for your Ford. PremiumCare, the top-tier Ford plan, provides more comprehensive car warranty coverage than you will likely find elsewhere.

However, customers who prefer paying for repairs out of pocket may not need an extended warranty, and it’s usually less expensive in the long run to save for the cost of repairs yourself.

Keep in mind that an extended warranty can increase the resale value of your Ford, but it will not increase your trade-in value at the dealership. Regardless, a Ford extended warranty can be one way to finance repairs and provide peace of mind on the road.

Ford Protect Extended Service Plans

Ford extended warranties are known as Ford Protect Extended Service Plans (ESPs). A Ford Protect ESP is available for all Ford vehicles, including new cars as well as used Ford models with or without remaining new vehicle warranty coverage. Ford’s extended service plans help customers save on expensive vehicle repair costs for up to 10 years or 175,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Ford Extended Warranty Coverage

Ford offers four extended warranty plans for gas and diesel vehicles, known as PremiumCare, ExtraCare, BaseCare, and PowertrainCare.

Unlike car insurance policies covering vehicle damage after a collision or other event, Ford’s extended warranty plans are designed to protect specific car components if a mechanical failure happens. It’s good to note that extended vehicle service contracts are never legally required as car insurance typically is.

Ford Extended Warranty Plans

See below for a detailed breakdown of each Ford Protect ESP and what coverage entails:

Ford
Extended Warranty Plan
What It Covers
PremiumCareMost similar to bumper-to-bumper warranty protection from Ford, this plan covers over 1,000 components. In addition to coverage for breakdowns due to defects in materials and workmanship, vehicle parts that need replacing due to normal wear and tear are also included.
ExtraCareProtects 113 vehicle components including the engine and transmission, braking system, high-tech components like adaptive cruise control and keyless entry, and all that’s covered under BaseCare.
BaseCareThis plan provides coverage for 84 components, including all that are covered with the PowertrainCare plan. Additional components included are related to a vehicle’s steering, brakes, front suspension, air conditioning, heating, and electrical systems.
PowertrainCareFord’s most basic extended warranty plan provides powertrain coverage that includes protection for 29 components related to the engine, transmission, and rear-wheel and front-wheel drives.

What Does A Ford Extended Warranty Cover?

Ford Extended Warranty Plans For Electric Vehicles

Ford also offers Ford Protect ESPs for its electric vehicles (EVs). These plans can last up to 10 years or 150,000 miles and provide similar levels of protection as those for gas and diesel vehicles. Learn more about the three coverage plans offered below.

Ford EV
Extended Warranty Plan
What It Covers
PremiumCare Plus EVThis plan covers all items in the PremiumCare EV tier but also includes routine maintenance services plus replacement of certain wear and tear items like shocks and struts, coolant hoses, and brake pads.
PremiumCare EVCovers 1,000+ parts for Ford EV models, including electrical components, high-tech systems, steering, brakes, suspension, and air conditioning. The plan covers parts and component failure due to workmanship, factory defects, or normal wear and tear.
ExtraCare EVCovers 113 vehicle components that impact drivability as well as its overall performance, including the drive motor, brakes, radiator, suspension, steering, and drive axels. In addition, ExtraCare EV covers some high-tech parts.
BaseCare EVThe lowest level of EV extended protection from Ford, this covers 84 components that deal with your vehicle’s drivability and overall performance, including the drive motor, brakes, steering, and drive axles.

Ford Extended Warranty Benefits

All Ford ESP warranty contracts are transferable and covered repairs only use Ford-authorized parts and work by certified auto technicians. Plans are also offered with interest-free financing for up to 30 months.

Additional benefits include:

  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Towing reimbursement (up to $100 per occurrence)
  • Emergency travel expense reimbursement (up to $1,000 total)
  • Key replacement services
  • Lockout assistance
  • Fluid or fuel delivery
  • Battery jump-starts
  • Rental vehicle benefits ($60 a day for up to ten days)

Ford Extended Warranty Exclusions

Even at the highest level of coverage, some components aren’t covered by a Ford extended warranty. Examples of excluded include some wear-and-tear items like wiper blades, brakes, fabric, upholstery, door handles and interior car knobs, vehicle trim, and the like. However, select maintenance services and wear-and-tear items are included in the Ford PremiumCare Plus EV plan.

On Ford EVs, the high-voltage battery assembly carries a factory warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles but is not included with extended warranty coverage.

Customers must also maintain their vehicles according to factory recommendations for their extended warranty to stay valid. It’s also good to note that maintenance services such as oil changes are not covered under the Ford extended warranty for gas and diesel vehicles but the PremiumCare Plus EV plan pays for limited scheduled services.

Where Can I Purchase A Ford Extended Warranty?

You can buy a Ford extended warranty from the Ford Protect website, in person at a Ford dealership, or from a Ford dealership that sells extended warranty plans online. The cost of a Ford Protect ESP will likely vary depending on where you purchase the plan.

Some online dealers provide more affordable coverage than in-person dealerships or the Ford Protect website. However, some drivers prefer to purchase an extended warranty at a local dealership where they are able to ask questions.

We recommend getting quotes from online dealers beforehand and bringing them with you to the dealership. You will be able to negotiate the cost of your Ford extended warranty if you have proof of lower prices offered for the same plan. In addition, some Ford dealerships will match the price of any quotes you bring from another dealership.

Ford Maintenance And Protection Plans

In addition to Ford’s extended warranty plans, Ford owners can add additional dealership-backed maintenance and protection plans to their new or used cars. These plans offer various coverage options allowing Ford owners to better maintain and protect their vehicles. See more on both maintenance and additional protection from Ford in the sections below.

Ford Premium Maintenance Plan

Ford offers vehicle owners the ability to purchase prepaid maintenance plans under its Ford Protect Premium Maintenance Plan. You can purchase plans for gas, diesel, and electric vehicles. These protection plans cover:

  • Multi-point inspections
  • Preventative care
  • Routine inspections
  • Engine oil and oil filter changes
  • Tire rotations
  • Diesel exhaust fluid fills
  • Wear and tear items like wiper blades, brake pads, and struts
  • All factory-required maintenance

Ford Additional Protection Plans

Additional Ford Protect plans cover cosmetic damage and components that are considered wear and tear items, which are not covered by most vehicle service contracts. Below, see more on Ford TireCare Plus, DentCare, WindshieldCare, TripleCare, SurfaceCare, and TheftCare.

Ford TireCare Plus Warranty Coverage

Ford TireCare Plus protects your tires and wheels from damage caused by road hazards such as glass, nails, metal, debris, and potholes. This plan also includes cosmetic coverage for alloy, aluminum, and steel wheels.

For all tires that are damaged beyond repair with more than 3/32” of tread depth remaining, Ford will reimburse you for replacement tires of comparable quality and cost. In addition, towing services to the nearest Ford or Lincoln dealership are covered for up to $100. There is no limit on claims.

Ford DentCare Ding And Dent Coverage

The Ford DentCare plan protects your vehicle’s body from accidental dent and ding damage. For dents or dings less than four inches, Ford’s that are located on an accessible area of the body panel, patented Paintless Dent Repair permanently removes damage without sanding, body fillers, or painting.

It’s good to note that plastic, fiberglass, or non-composite body panels are excluded from this plan. In addition, there is no limit on claims for dent repair.

Ford WindshieldCare Warranty Coverage

This plan protects your vehicle’s windshield from damage caused by road hazards. Coverage only applies if the damage is less than six inches in diameter. Ford WindshieldCare can last up to 8 years/unlimited miles. Again, there is no limit on claims.

Ford TripleCare Warranty Coverage

Ford TripleCare offers Ford owners the option to combine the dent and ding, tire, and windshield protection plans into one service contract with no limit on claims you can file. Contact your local Ford dealership for coverage terms and pricing. The warranty can last for up to 8 years/unlimited miles.

Ford SurfaceCare Warranty Coverage

Ford SurfaceCare covers your vehicle’s interior and exterior for up to 7 years/unlimited miles. The warranty pays for Motocraft protect products and sealants to prevent damage from:

  • Exterior fading
  • Loss of exterior gloss
  • Hard water etching
  • Industrial fallout
  • Bird droppings and insects
  • Acid rain
  • Accidental paint overspray
  • Tree sap
  • Oxidation
  • Road salt and de-icing agents

Ford’s SurfaceCare warranty also provides protection for your vehicle’s interior against problems like food or drink stains, oil-based stains, bodily fluids, inks, dyes, cosmetic makeup, crayons, and pet stains.

Ford TheftCare Protection

Ford TheftCare protection is a limited warranty that provides a monetary reimbursement of up to $5,000 for purchasing a replacement vehicle if your Ford is stolen. Typically, insurance companies only cover the market value of your vehicle at the time of theft. Coverage can last up to five years and provides your vehicle with distinctive window labels to deter thieves.

Ford Extended Warranty Cost

To obtain a quote for a Ford extended warranty, you’ll need to provide your personal information–including your name, address, phone number, and email–in addition to vehicle information such as your vehicle identification number (VIN) and odometer reading. You can easily do this online via the official Ford Protect website.

Our team’s extensive research efforts have found that the average extended car warranty costs $3,026 in total. We calculated this average using quotes obtained from leaders in the extended warranty industry. See the table below for a breakdown of average costs by coverage level:

Extended Car Warranty TypeAverage Total Cost
Exclusionary$3,124
Mid-Level$3,056
Powertrain$2,893

Ford Extended Warranty Deductible

Deductibles for the Ford Protect Extended Service plan range from $0 to $200. Ford also offers what is known as a disappearing deductible, which means the deductible is waived if covered repairs are done by the local Ford dealership where the plan was sold.

What Affects Ford Extended Warranty Costs?

Multiple factors affect the cost of a Ford extended warranty, such as your Ford’s model, year, mileage, and the level of coverage you choose.

Here’s how these and other factors can affect the price of an extended auto warranty:

  • Coverage length: If you drive less than the average person, a shorter contract is often cheaper than a plan with long coverage terms.
  • Coverage level: Comprehensive plans, like a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty, cost the most, while a simple powertrain warranty costs the least.
  • Make and model: Ford vehicles with a higher average cost of repairs will cost more to cover with an extended warranty. For example, a Ford F-250 extended warranty is more expensive than a Ford Edge extended warranty.
  • Mileage and vehicle age: Vehicles with high mileage and older vehicles are more prone to mechanical breakdowns, which increases the cost of extended warranty coverage.
  • Deductible: Ford gives drivers a choice between a $0, $50, $100, or $200 deductible. A higher deductible will lower the overall cost of the plan.
  • Existing coverage: You’ll often get a cheaper contract if the original factory warranty is still active.

Do You Need Ford Extended Warranty Coverage?

Before purchasing an extended warranty, consider Ford’s reliability and factory car warranty coverage. If you think the cost of your Ford extended warranty will exceed the cost of future repair bills, this coverage may not be the right choice. The reliability of your vehicle is crucial when determining if an extended warranty is worth it.

Another thing to consider before purchasing an extended warranty is your vehicle’s current coverage. If you plan to sell or trade your Ford before or shortly after your factory coverage expires, there is little reason to purchase an extended warranty.

Are Fords Reliable?

According to RepairPal, Ford has a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0 stars, placing it 21st out of 32 ranked automakers. With a higher than average probability of experiencing a serious mechanical failure, it’s wise for drivers to consider the average cost of repairs for Ford vehicles.

Ford Maintenance Cost

According to RepairPal, the average annual repair cost for Ford vehicles is $775, which is high compared to the industry-wide average of $652. Repair cost numbers are based on customer reports. The chart below outlines some common Ford repairs and estimated costs:

ModelRepairEstimated Cost
Ford TaurusFuel pump replacement$611 to $2,757
Ford RangerHead gasket replacement$1,463 to $1,847
Ford F-150Radiator replacement$637 to $1,143

  • Safety restraint system warranty: 5 years/60,000 miles
  • Corrosion perforation warranty: 5 years/unlimited miles

How To Check Your Ford Warranty Coverage

If you need to see if your Ford is still under factory warranty, you can check its status online by entering your VIN on Ford’s owner’s website. If you want to check the status of your Ford Protect extended warranty, you’ll need to call customer service and give the representative your vehicle’s VIN.

Ford Manufacturer Vs. Third-Party Extended Warranties

Before purchasing a Ford Protect Extended Warranty, it is important to weigh the pros and cons. You can only purchase a Ford Protect ESP from Ford or a certified dealership, but there are comparable coverage options offered by multiple third-party vehicle service contract providers.

We’ve outlined in the table below a comparison between Ford’s extended warranty and Endurance, our top extended warranty pick in our industry-wide review.

What Are The Benefits Of A Third-Party Extended Warranty?

If you’re looking to lengthen your factory warranty coverage, you can purchase a vehicle service contract from Ford or a third-party provider. Third-party contracts generally offer a wider selection of repair shops, longer coverage terms, and coverage for older vehicles. However, a third-party warranty does not guarantee use of genuine Ford parts or factory-trained technicians, so you’ll have to decide what’s most important to you.

Ford Extended Warranties: Our Take

Through Ford Protect, drivers can purchase an extended warranty, prepaid maintenance, or additional protection plans directly from the Ford Motor Company. However, a third-party provider might offer a broader selection of car warranty coverage levels and better pricing. We encourage you to obtain extended warranty quotes from multiple reputable providers as well as Ford itself. This way, you can find the right coverage at the right price for your vehicle’s needs.
