The Gist:

  • The average Mazda owner will pay around $462 per year on repairs.
  • A Mazda extended warranty can last as long as 12 years/200,000 miles.
  • Mazda offers a Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain plan.

Mazda vehicles score highly for reliability in industry studies, yet the factory warranty only lasts three years. If you’d like peace of mind after the manufacturer warranty expires, you may consider a Mazda extended warranty.

In this article, we’ll review Mazda’s warranty plans and term lengths, then compare the Mazda extended warranty to coverage from the industry’s best extended car warranty companies. Any time you shop for vehicle service contracts, we recommend getting multiple quotes so you can compare plans side by side.

Mazda Extended Warranty Coverage

Mazda’s extended warranties are called Mazda Protection Products. There are three options for coverage: Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain, and these plans can last up to 200,000 miles.  These plans require you to go to a Mazda dealership for all repairs. Also, keep in mind that these plans are only available for vehicles that are still within the factory warranty limits.

Drivers get a choice of a $0 or $100 deductible, and if they choose $100, it’s waived if repairs are done at the dealer where they purchased the car. The Mazda extended warranty is cancellable and fully transferable, as well.

Mazda Platinum Extended Warranty

This is the most comprehensive extended warranty that Mazda offers and is similar to the original factory warranty. It’s a bumper-to-bumper plan that covers all your vehicle’s most important components, plus a long list of extras. It lasts for 9 years/125,000 miles.

Mazda Gold Extended Warranty

This mid-tier plan provides coverage for all powertrain components, like the engine and drivetrain, as well as some additional items, like brakes, steering, suspension, fuel system, electronics and electrical components, cooling, air conditioning and heating, and hybrid parts. It lasts for 12 years/200,000 miles.

Mazda Powertrain Extended Warranty

This is Mazda’s most basic extended warranty. It resembles the factory powertrain warranty, and it protects your car’s engine, transmission, and front- and rear-wheel driving systems. It lasts for 12 years/200,000 miles.

Other Mazda Protection Products

In addition to these mechanical warranties, Mazda offers:

  • Tire and wheel protection: Covers damage to tires and wheels from road hazards, and includes reimbursement for repairing flat tires or replacing wheels.
  • Excess wear and use protection: This covers up to $5,000 in dents and dings when you turn in your leased Mazda.
  • Mazda gap protection: This helps cover the difference between the balance on your loan or lease and the actual cash value of your car in the event of a total loss.
  • Prepaid maintenance plans: This two-tiered program covers routine maintenance, like tire rotations, oil and oil filter changes, and more.

Mazda Extended Warranty Perks

Mazda’s extended warranty comes with the following added benefits:

  • Emergency roadside assistance including towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and flat tire service
  • Trip interruption benefits
  • Substitute transportation

Mazda Extended Warranty Exclusions

Here are a few exclusions that are not covered under the Mazda extended vehicle warranty:

  • Damage from misuse or lack of maintenance
  • Wear items
  • Scheduled maintenance
  • Damage from environmental events
  • Cosmetic items
  • Emissions components

You’ll need to keep detailed maintenance records, because if you haven’t been keeping up on maintenance, Mazda can deny a particular repair. This won’t void the warranty, however. The one thing that can void Mazda’s warranty is tampering with the odometer.

Is Mazda Extended Warranty Worth It?

With a Mazda extended warranty, you don’t have to decipher what repairs are worth fixing. When you experience a breakdown, you can have peace of mind that covered repairs are taken care of. Having an extended warranty can also help you preserve your monthly repair budget after your factory warranty has expired.

Mazda Reliability

In terms of reliability, a Mazda can save you money on repair costs compared to other brands. In fact, RepairPal ranks it the fifth most reliable among 32 car brands.

Mazda Repairs

In general, Mazda repairs tend to be affordable. According to RepairPal, Mazda owners pay about $462 per year on maintenance and repairs. That’s quite a bit less than the industry average of $652.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll spend exactly $462 each year. Individual repair costs vary widely. Here are a few examples:

ModelRepairEstimated Cost
Mazda 6Fuel level sending unit replacement$1,156 to $1,248
Mazda 929Serpentine belt replacement$66 to $111
Mazda CX-5Stabilizer bushing replacement$508 to $634
Mazda CX-3Door mirror replacement$442 to $456

Mazda Factory Warranty

If you bought a new Mazda within the past few years, you probably still have some type of coverage. Here’s what Mazda provides on all new vehicles:

  • Bumper-to-bumper warranty for 3 years/36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty for 5 years/60,000 miles
  • 24/7 roadside assistance for 3 years/36,000 miles

The bumper-to-bumper warranty covers almost any mechanical or electrical part on the vehicle against defects in workmanship or materials. Once it expires, hundreds of parts in your car are no longer covered.

Mazda CPO Warranty

You might still have coverage for your Mazda if you bought a certified pre-owned (CPO) car, too. Eligible vehicles pass a 160-point inspection and then receive a special CPO warranty.

This Mazdo CPO warranty adds 1 year/12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage on top of the existing factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. If the factory warranty has expired, Mazda’s CPO vehicle limited warranty begins on the purchase date. Additionally, CPO vehicles have an extended powertrain warranty of 7 years/100,000 miles from the in-service date.

Benefits Of A Third-Party Mazda Car Warranty

When you expand your search beyond the dealership warranty, you’ll find that you have dozens of options for coverage and pricing. The best third-party extended warranty companies offer four to six types of coverage with multiple contract options, where Mazda only offers three.

Another advantage is that you can purchase an extended warranty after your factory warranty has expired. In addition, third-party extended warranties usually allow you to go to any repair shops certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE®). There are states that only have one or two dealerships within their borders, including Oklahoma, the Dakotas, Idaho, Mississippi, and more, whereas there are many more ASE-certified shops.

However, a vehicle service contract from an independent warranty company doesn’t guarantee the use of genuine Mazda parts, or that factory-trained technicians will work on your vehicle.

Here’s a comparison between Mazda’s extended warranty and Endurance, a reputable third-party warranty company:

How We Rate Warranty Providers

Our review process aims to deliver consistent and unbiased assessments of extended auto warranty providers. While there are multiple qualities that make a warranty company successful, our review team focuses on those we believe are the most important for consumers:

  • Reputation: It’s important that an extended car warranty company is able to meet its claims obligations. Companies with a strong rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and a long history of reliable service score well in this category. We also evaluate the availability and transparency of each company’s contracts, as well as whether each provider offers a money-back guarantee.
  • Coverage: Our team of experts looks at the number of extended warranty plans available, as well as term limits, exclusions, and added benefits like roadside assistance. Ratings also take into account the availability of maintenance coverage.
  • Cost: Cost can be difficult to compare between providers because so many factors impact vehicle service contract pricing. To determine our cost score, we perform a secret shopper analysis for a variety of vehicles and plans and consider available deductibles.
  • Customer Experience: We listen to real customer sales calls and comb through reviews on sites like the BBB to learn about customer experiences. Warranty companies with a low volume of complaints score well in this area. We also consider the availability of mobile apps and chat features.
