The Gist:

  • Lexus’ manufacturer warranty protection provides powertrain coverage for 6 years/70,000 miles and bumper-to-bumper coverage for 4 years/50,000 miles.
  • The cost of an extended Lexus car warranty will depend on your vehicle model, mileage, level of coverage, and extended warranty provider.
  • The three extended warranty plans offered by Lexus can only be purchased before your vehicle’s factory warranty expires.

Repairing a Lexus isn’t cheap. However, do you really need an extended car warranty for your Lexus? What coverage does a Lexus vehicle service agreement offer? Are there better third-party alternatives?

This article will answer these questions and more. We’ll outline what Lexus includes in its factory and certified pre-owned (CPO) warranties and review what’s covered by the manufacturer’s extended warranty. We’ll also give you information to see how Lexus warranty offerings compare to some of the best extended car warranty companies.

Lexus Extended Warranty Coverage

Lexus’ extended warranty program is called Lexus Extra Care. Sold as vehicle service agreements (VSAs), these warranties provide protection against mechanical breakdowns caused by faulty workmanship or defective parts. There are three levels of protection plans with Lexus Extra Care and each is comparable to powertrain, mid-level, and exclusionary extended warranty coverage.

Coverage terms vary by dealer and will include a length and mileage limit specific to your vehicle and contract. To be eligible for purchase, your Lexus must be less than four years old and have less than 50,000 miles on it.

Lexus Extended Warranty Plans

A Lexus extended warranty provides coverage after your original manufacturer’s auto warranty expires and this coverage pays for repairs performed by factory-trained technicians. Through vehicle service contracts, Lexus Extra Care offers three levels of coverage. The three extended warranty plans offered by Lexus can only be purchased before your vehicle’s factory warranty expires.

The table below describes each extended warranty plan and the systems covered.

Lexus
Extended Warranty
What It Covers
Extra Care PowertrainThis is a basic powertrain warranty that provides coverage for vehicle components related to the engine, transmission, and drive axle.
Extra Care GoldThe Extra Care Gold plan offers mid-tier coverage that includes electronic components, brakes, the cooling system, fuel system, hybrid components, and steering–in addition to all parts under the Powertrain plan.
Extra Care PlatinumThis plan is the most comprehensive extended coverage offered by Lexus. It’s a bumper-to-bumper warranty that includes coverage for components not covered in the Gold or Powertrain plans, such as the airbags, CD player, radio, coolant sensor, air pump, door lock assembly, hinges, and seat belts.

Both the Lexus Extra Care Platinum and Extra Care Gold plans also cover hybrid and alternative fuel vehicle parts, including the transmission control module, inverter with converter, battery current sensor, motor assembly, transaxle assembly, and more.

What Does A Lexus Extended Warranty Cover?

Each Lexus extended warranty plan covers specific parts of your vehicle, so it’s good to know precisely what parts are covered under each level of protection. See the table below for a list of the main covered components with each Lexus extended warranty.

  • Wiper blades
  • Body panels and body components

Lexus Extended Warranty Perks And Benefits

All Lexus extended warranty contracts are transferable and include the following perks:

  • 24/7 roadside assistance: This includes services such as towing to the nearest authorized repair facility, battery jump starts, flat tire fixes, lockout assistance, and fuel delivery. Services are provided by the American Automobile Association (AAA).
  • Rental car reimbursement: For up to five days, Lexus provides up to $50 a day for a car rental or other substitute transportation while your car is being repaired.
  • Trip interruption coverage: You’ll be reimbursed up to $100 per day for lodging and meals if you suffer a covered breakdown more than 150 miles from home. This benefit is for a maximum of five days over the lifetime of your contract–or four days maximum on Extra Care Gold and Extra Care Powertrain plans.

Additional Lexus Protection Products

Lexus offers additional plans to cover many items not included in your factory warranty or extended car warranty. In some cases, you must purchase the additional coverage at the time of a new lease or when you buy your car. See the table below for the additional protection products Lexus offers.

Lexus
Protection Product
What It Covers
Guaranteed Auto Protection (GAP)This helps protect you from out-of-pocket costs when your car is declared a total loss from theft, fire, or accidental damage. It can also cover up to $1,000 of your auto insurance deductible.
Prepaid Maintenance PlansPrepaid maintenance plans through Lexus Luxury Care can provide service for your car for up to 5 years/90,000 miles. This includes oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, tire rotations, and more.
Tire and Wheel ProtectionLexus offers two levels of tire and wheel protection, known as the Gold and Platinum plans. Gold protects your tires and wheels only, while Platinum adds paintless dent repair and windshield repair coverage. You can also add on key replacement protection.
Excess Wear and Use ProtectionThis plan pays for fixing damage like stains or ripped seats on a vehicle you leased. The Lexus Excess Wear and Use Protection coverage includes replacing missing parts or equipment, and repairs for paint damage caused by dents.

Lexus Extended Warranty Cost

Lexus doesn’t offer prices for its extended warranties online, so you’ll need to contact a dealership to get a quote for your vehicle. However, it’s easy to look at online reviews to find what customers are paying for their extended coverage plans.

We found one driver who was offered a Platinum plan for their used 2018 LC500 for a total of $3,899. Another driver reported buying a plan for their new 2023 ES350 for $2,900 after negotiating with the dealership’s original price of $3,700. However, keep in mind the extended car warranty cost will vary depending on your vehicle.

Lexus offers $0 and $100 deductibles, which impacts your final price. In addition, all contracts include a money-back guarantee if canceled within 30 days.

Average Extended Car Warranty Costs

Our team has found that the average extended car warranty costs $3,026 in total. This average was calculated from hours of research and quotes gathered from top providers in our industry-wide review. See the table below for a breakdown of average costs by level of coverage:

Extended Car Warranty TypeAverage Total Cost
Exclusionary$3,124
Mid-Level$3,060
Powertrain$2,893

Lexus Extended Warranty Reviews

Lexus offers standard extended warranty options, and the manufacturer’s Platinum plan can give drivers comprehensive coverage at a reasonable price. However, you must take your Lexus to one of the automaker’s dealerships for all maintenance and repairs. If you do not live close to a Lexus dealership, this could be an inconvenience when you need to have your car worked on.

It is worth looking into third-party alternatives to find the best price, wider coverage options, and more flexibility in where repairs are done. If you want genuine Lexus parts and factory-trained auto technicians for repairs, the Lexus extended warranty is a safe bet.

Is A Lexus Extended Warranty Worth It?

Before you decideto purchase an extended car warranty, you should consider your car’s age, mileage, and past mechanical or repair history. If you plan on selling or trading your Lexus before the factory warranty expires, it is probably not worth the investment.

However, Lexus extended service contracts are transferable and may increase the resale value of your car if you sell it to a private party. An extended warranty won’t increase your vehicle’s trade-in value because dealerships generally do not consider any extended coverage when determining the value.

If you are still unsure if an extended warranty suits your specific needs, the sections below will explain the most important factors to consider.

Do You Still Have Lexus Factory Warranty Coverage?

Your Lexus may still be covered by the factory warranty or a certified pre-owned (CPO) used car warranty. But when the original warranty expires, an extended warranty may be appealing. Below we will describe in detail each new and used Lexus car warranty to help you determine if you still have coverage.

Lexus Factory Warranty Coverage

All new Lexus vehicles come with the following manufacturer’s warranty protection:

  • 1-year/unlimited-mile parts warranty
  • 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty
  • 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty
  • 6-year/unlimited-mile corrosion perforation warranty
  • 8-year/100,000-mile hybrid warranty
  • 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty

Lexus Certified Pre-Owned Warranty

Certified pre-owned (CPO) Lexus cars are protected by a 2-year/unlimited mile extension on the vehicle’s basic 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty. The extra CPO warranty is non-transferable.

Is Lexus A Reliable Car?

According to RepairPal, Lexus makes some of the most reliable vehicles with an average rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Of course, dependability and repair prices differ for each Lexus model. See below for reliability ratings and average annual repair costs for some Lexus models:

RepairPal Reliability RatingAverage Annual Repair Cost
Lexus LS4603.5$767
Lexus RX3504.0$550
Lexus GX4603.5$770

Lexus Maintenance Cost

Many luxury vehicles are expensive to maintain due to extensive servicing and specialty components. However, according to RepairPal, Lexus vehicles are above average in terms of reliability and have a low annual repair cost of around $551. The average annual repair cost for all makes and models is $652.

Even if Lexus vehicles are reliable and generally have low repair costs, you still might benefit from purchasing an extended warranty. The table below shows estimated repair costs for Lexus’ most popular vehicles.

ModelReplacement PartsEstimated Cost
Lexus NX 200tPower seat switch replacement$1,143 to $1,157
Lexus SC 300Water pump replacement$1,045 to $1,146
Lexus NX 300hBrake pad replacement$445 to $505
Lexus RX 350Heater hose replacement$405 to $459
Lexus RC 300Thermostat replacement$371 to $427

While some Lexus repairs can be pricey (such as replacing the transmission), these issues are unlikely to arise in your vehicle’s lifetime, provided the car is properly maintained.

Aftermarket Warranty

You may consider a third-party extended warranty for your Lexus. Third-party coverage is sometimes cheaper than a vehicle service agreement offered by a manufacturer. Other benefits of third-party plans include:

  • Coverage can generally be purchased at any time.
  • There are often more coverage levels to choose from.
  • Plans often cover high-mileage vehicles and have long term limits.
  • You can choose from a large repair network.

These are all great benefits, but there are alsosome drawbacks to third-party providers. Third-party providers rarely guarantee the use of genuine Lexus parts for repairs, and because you don’t need to have repairs done at a dealership, there’s no guarantee that your car will be worked on by a Lexus-trained technician.

Extended Warranty For Lexus: Our Take

A Lexus extended warranty may be a good idea, especially given that the Lexus factory warranty expires after only a few years. While Lexus vehicles are relatively reliable, especially compared to other luxury cars, an extended warranty can help protect you against unexpected repair costs.

Is a Lexus extended warranty worth it?

For some drivers, the peace of mind offered by a Lexus extended warranty is worth the extra cost.

Does Lexus have a lifetime warranty?

Lexus does not have a lifetime warranty. However, some third-party extended warranty providers may offer lifetime warranties for Lexus vehicles. Lexus dealerships may sell such warranties, but these are not offered or serviced by the Lexus brand or the Toyota Motor Corporation, which owns the Lexus line.

How We Rate Warranty Providers

Our review process aims to deliver consistent and unbiased assessments of extended auto warranty providers. While there are multiple qualities that make a warranty company successful, our review team focuses on those we believe are the most important for consumers:

  • Reputation: It’s important that an extended car warranty company is able to meet its claims obligations. Companies with a strong rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and a long history of reliable service score well in this category. We also evaluate the availability and transparency of each company’s contracts, as well as whether each provider offers a money-back guarantee.
  • Coverage: Our team of experts looks at the number of extended warranty plans available, as well as term limits, exclusions, and added benefits like roadside assistance. Ratings also take into account the availability of maintenance coverage.
  • Price: Cost can be difficult to compare between providers because so many factors impact vehicle service contract pricing. To determine our cost score, we perform a secret shopper analysis for a variety of vehicles and plans and consider available deductibles.
  • Customer Experience: We listen to real customer sales calls and comb through reviews on sites like the BBB to learn about customer experiences. Warranty companies with a low volume of complaints score well in this area. We also consider the availability of mobile apps and chat features.
