What Does An Acura Extended Warranty Cover?

Acura’s extended protection plan is called the Acura Care® Vehicle Service Contract (VSC), and it pays for genuine Acura parts installed by Acura-trained auto technicians for all covered repairs. You can add Acura Care to a vehicle within its 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

There are six coverage plans offered through Acura Care depending on where your car is in its life cycle. These plans are known as:

  • New Vehicle Coverage
  • Pre-Owned Vehicle Coverage
  • Certified Additional Coverage
  • Certified Used Additional Coverage
  • Certified Used Powertrain Coverage
  • Powertrain Coverage (pre-owned vehicles only)

Non-Acura vehicles are potentially eligible for New Vehicle Coverage, Pre-Owned Vehicle Coverage, and Powertrain Coverage only. New, certified pre-owned, and used Acuras within factory warranty limits are eligible for the higher levels of protection, which cover almost every component of the vehicle and is similar to the manufacturer’s warranty.

The maximum coverage period for an Acura extended warranty is 8 years/120,000 miles. In addition, the Acura extended warranty is transferable to a new owner, which can increase your vehicle’s resale value.

Acura Extended Warranty Plans

New, Pre-Owned, Certified Additional, and Certified Used Additional Coverage provide protection for the following vehicle systems:

  • Drivetrain: Includes the engine, transmission, differential, and front and rear axles.
  • Electrical: Covers your car’s computer, electronic components, and electrical system.
  • Chassis: Includes the suspension, steering, and brake systems.
  • Heating/Cooling: Air conditioning, heating, and cooling systems are covered.
  • Acura Genuine Accessories: Includes audio and communication devices and accessories.

Powertrain and Certified Used Powertrain Coverage protects the following components:

  • Engine
  • Drive axles (front and rear)
  • Transmission
  • Seals, gaskets, and fluids

Acura Extended Warranty Benefits

The Acura extended warranty comes with four standard perks:

Extended Warranty Benefit
What It Covers
Roadside AssistanceIncludes towing services, lockout assistance, battery jump-starts, tire changes, and fuel delivery.
Trip Interruption BenefitsProvides coverage for meals and lodging for up to $300 a day for a maximum of three days in the event of a covered breakdown at least 100 miles from home.
Rental Car ReimbursementReimburses your rental car expenses up to $45 a day for a maximum of six days.
Concierge ServicesAvailable 24/7, these services include help with hotel reservations, airline ticket information, alternate transportation/rental vehicles, and more.

The first three benefits are fairly common across the industry. However, not many brands provide concierge services with extended warranties, so Acura stands out for it. It’s good to note that Acura Care coverage on non-Acura vehicles comes with reduced per-diem benefits for rental car costs and trip interruption.

Acura Extended Warranty Exclusions

With an extended warranty from Acura, you’re required to visit an Acura dealership anytime you need repairs. Acura does make a concession for emergency repairs if no dealership is within towing distance, allowing you to receive repairs at an Acura Care-authorized service center.

Acura’s extended warranty also doesn’t quite cover the same components that the factory warranty covers. Here are a some exclusions:

  • Batteries (except for hybrid batteries)
  • Wear items like tires
  • Scheduled maintenance
  • Emissions components
  • Cosmetic items
  • General wear and tear
  • Wheels
  • Parts damaged from failure of a non-covered part
  • Breakdowns from over-revving or overheating

Acura Extended Warranty Costs

Acura doesn’t freely offer up cost information for its extended warranty coverage plans. You’ll need to head to an authorized Acura dealer to find out more about pricing, coverage terms, and whether your vehicle qualifies.

You can bundle the cost of an Acura-backed vehicle service contract when you lease or finance your car. If you purchase it separately, extended warranty financing is also available through a dealer. Keep in mind you’ll be paying interest on the cost of your service contract unless you pay up front.

Acura Extended Warranty Prices

Our team spent hundreds of hours gathering cost data from top providers in the extended warranty industry and found the average extended warranty costs $3,026 in total. As Acura is considered a luxury brand, Acura owners shouldn’t be surprised if their manufacturer-backed vehicle service contract costs more.

See the table below for a cost breakdown by extended warranty coverage level.

Extended Warranty Protection LevelAverage Total Cost

Exact costs will vary based on factors such as your vehicle’s make, model, mileage, age, and your chosen level of coverage. It’s best to reach out and obtain a quote to gain a better understanding of what an Acura extended warranty will end up costing.

Do You Need Acura Extended Warranty Coverage?

Your car will be covered for the first 4 years/50,000 miles by the factory Acura warranty, which is a bumper-to-bumper warranty. New Acuras also come with a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. After that, you’ll be responsible for the cost of most repairs. If you’re looking to avoid paying out of pocket for potentially costly repairs, an Acura extended warranty can give you peace of mind as your car ages.

It’s hard to predict the timing of repairs. An extended warranty can take on some of those costs and help keep your monthly budget consistent. Plus, extended warranties usually come with extra perks like roadside assistance and trip interruption benefits, which can make the experience of a breakdown less stressful.

Acura Maintenance And Repair Costs

Acura is the luxury division of Honda, so it benefits from much of Honda’s research and development of reliable machines. RepairPal ranks Acura in second place for reliability in comparison to 32 car brands, which speaks to just how dependable these vehicles are. However, Acura was ranked below average in the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study℠, with an average of 216 problems per 100 vehicles. The study average was 190 problems per 100 vehicles.

According to RepairPal, Acura drivers pay $501 per year on average for maintenance and repairs, which is less than the industry average of $652. Repair costs will vary based on your location, model, and other factors. Here are a few estimates of repairs you could encounter with an Acura:

Acura ModelRepairEstimated Cost
Acura TLXBackup warning system sensor replacement$455 to $473
Acura MDXBlower motor replacement$429 to $455
Acura RLXThermostat replacement$459 to $499
Acura RDXLiftgate pulldown motor replacement$895 to $990

New Acura And Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Acura Warranties

If your car is still fairly new, you probably have warranty coverage. Here’s what Acura provides on all new car models:

  • Bumper-to-bumper warranty for 4 years/50,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty for 6 years/70,000 miles
  • Hybrid battery for 8 years/100,000 miles
  • Corrosion warranty for 5 years/unlimited miles
  • Coverage for emissions components per federal and state requirements

If you bought a used Acura from a dealer, it could have a CPO warranty. Used cars less than six years old and with fewer than 80,000 miles can qualify for the Acura Certified program. After passing a 182-point inspection, the Acura Certified warranty includes powertrain and non-powertrain coverage.

The non-powertrain warranty lasts for 2 years/100,000 miles on the odometer. The two-year period begins when the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty expires or when the CPO vehicle is purchased. It covers a wide range of mechanical and electrical parts, but not quite as much as the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty.

The powertrain warranty lasts for 7 years/100,000 miles from the in-service date. Items covered are identical to Acura’s factory powertrain warranty.

What Are The Benefits Of A Third-Party Extended Car Warranty?

While it can be a good idea to extend your Acura warranty, we think it’s also worth checking out third-party providers. Aftermarket plans allow you to:

  • Visit any repair shop certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE®) for coverage
  • Add coverage for older vehicles
  • Add coverage after the factory warranty has expired
  • Choose between many coverage levels

With third-party extended car warranties, you generally have more flexibility and options that can lower your price.

Below, we’ve compared Acura’s vehicle service contracts to extended warranty options from Endurance, a popular provider. You’ll notice that an Endurance auto warranty can cover vehicles beyond 200,000 miles. Since Acuras are generally reliable, it’s a good idea to have coverage that lasts.

Acura Extended Warranty: Our Take

Acura vehicles are generally very reliable, and the Acura extended warranty is comprehensive and lasts for a good amount of time. However, you can’t purchase a plan after the factory warranty expires. If you want to add coverage later on, choose your own mechanic, or get longer coverage terms, you might want to look at third-party extended car warranty companies.

To find the best deal and coverage for your Acura, we recommend getting a few free quotes from leading providers that ranked highly in our comprehensive review, such as Endurance, Carchex, and CarShield.

How We Rate Warranty Providers

Our review process aims to deliver consistent and unbiased assessments of extended auto warranty providers. While there are multiple qualities that make a warranty company successful, our review team focuses on those we believe are the most important for consumers:

  • Reputation: It’s important that an extended car warranty company is able to meet its claims obligations. Companies with a strong rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and a long history of reliable service score well in this category. We also evaluate the availability and transparency of each company’s contracts, as well as whether each provider offers a money-back guarantee.
  • Coverage: Our team of experts looks at the number of extended warranty plans available, as well as term limits, exclusions, and added benefits like roadside assistance. Ratings also take into account the availability of maintenance coverage.
  • Price: Cost can be difficult to compare between providers because so many factors impact vehicle service contract pricing. To determine our cost score, we perform a secret shopper analysis for a variety of vehicles and plans and consider available deductibles.
  • Customer Experience: We listen to real customer sales calls and comb through reviews on sites like the BBB to learn about customer experiences. Warranty companies with a low volume of complaints score well in this area. We also consider the availability of mobile apps and chat features.
